Job Summary: The Turf and Grounds Superintendent is responsible for the year-round care and maintenance of all mowed grasses, irrigation systems, parking lots and walking trails of Memorial Park. They will also oversee and direct the branch employees in daily duties. Special attention to detail and high-quality care is required for the Zoysia grass lawns and irrigation systems of the park.

Responsibilities and Duties Include:

· Supervise the Turf and Grounds crew with park maintenance programs.

· Plan and manage turfgrass programs: mowing/trimming, drainage systems, watering, fertilizing, topdressing, and aerification.

· Develop and implement Integrated Pest Management program for areas of responsibility. Must be willing to apply pesticides and train crew members in chemical applications.

· Maintain performance of extensive irrigation pump and city pressure systems within horticulture, turfgrass, greenhouse, and forested areas.

· Manage daily maintenance of decomposed granite and natural surface walking trails throughout the park: Repair washouts, remove weeds (chemically/physically), etc.

· Monitor and perform maintenance of parking lots within the park.

· Operate and train team members to operate small and large equipment including utility vehicles, mowers, sprayers, trucks, tractors, backpack blowers, weed eaters, edgers, and others as needed.

· Ensure appropriate use and care of daily Turf and Grounds branch equipment, supplies, and materials.

· Use work order system to track preventative maintenance, inspections, and assigned work orders in an organized and timely manner.

· Develop the Turf and Grounds Operations branch’s annual budget byforecasting the needs of a quality turf and grounds care program.

· Act as owners' representative for turf and grounds related elements of MPC upcoming capital projects. This includes attending meetings and reviewing documents to provideinput, comments, feedback, andassistance relatedto turf and grounds areas.

· Demonstrate ownership of assigned work by upholding and maintaining standards to the highest degree by understanding plant health and environmental conditions.

· Occasional oversight of volunteer activities related to the turf and grounds branch.

· Communicate issues regarding infrastructure, furnishings, safety hazards, quality of the Park user experience issues as needed via work order system.

· Work collaboratively and creatively with Park Operations leadership in a team-first environment.

· Assist with other departmental programming in the Park.

· Enforce MPC rules, safety policies, and procedures, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).Conduct and document safety training as needed and ensure compliance with safety protocol.

· Interact with Park patrons in a courteous and professional manner. Ensure team members are trained and adhering accordingly. Be prepared to provide accurate and pertinent information regarding MPC and the Park.

· Assist with other Park Operations teams as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

- Four-year bachelor’s degree and/or special certification in turf management, horticulture, or related plant science program with two years of turfgrass/landscaping supervising experience.

-Two-year associates degree with four years of turfgrass/landscaping supervising experience.

-In lieu of preferred degree, 6 or more years' experience in a turfgrass position, horticulture, professional landscaping, or related field; in which 4 or more are in a supervisory role, will be considered.

· Positive leadership and supervisory experience.

· Proven experience of high quality turfgrass and irrigation systems management.

· Knowledge and proper use of various pesticides and fertilizers.

· Possess or obtain a Texas Pesticide Applicator’s license within 90 days.

· Experience with building and tracking an annual budget.

· Ability to read and understand pesticide labels and government regulations.

· An understanding of native Texas turfgrass as well as invasive weeds, funguses, insects, and other factors that affect turfgrass growth in Texas.

· Experience with scheduling and modifying irrigation management software.

· Motivated self-starter who has an eye for detail.

· Strong written and oral communication skills

· Computer Skills: Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.Must be able to learn new software programs.

· Exceptional time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

· Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Abilities Required:

· Ability to perform heavy, physical labor daily in all weather conditions.

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

· Ability to prioritize work functions and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. repeatedly, throughout a given workday.

· Ability to operate power equipment throughout a workday.

· Ability to stand, crouch, and climb to use ladders and perform various types of manual labor throughout the day.
